Zappacosta has shared his thoughts on the possibility of sealing a return to Italy’s top flight after two years in west London with Chelsea, according to Roma’s website:

“I am happy to join Roma, after an experience abroad which has allowed me to progress both as a player and as a person. To be able to play for a great club like this is a huge motivation. . I can’t wait to start training alongside my new teammates. “

The 27-year-old has plenty of Serie A experience to rely on. He enjoyed stints at Atalanta and Turin before moving to the Premier League in 2017.

Zappacosta was brought to Chelsea by Antonio Conte and made 22 appearances in his debut season.

However, he only made four in 2018-19 after slipping through the hierarchy under Conte’s successor Maurizio Sarri.

The right-back hasn’t appeared in any of Chelsea’s three games this season and has explained how he feels about returning to Italy before sealing his change.

He told Sky in Italy (h / t Air sports): “The return to my country is very moving. I missed Italy a lot and I am happy to come back here with Roma.”

Simon Johnson at Standard Evening noted how Zappacosta is the last player signed in 2017 from:

So, with Zappacosta joining Roma on loan, this means that of the 7 #cfc signings made at a cost of £ 187million (approx) in the 2017 summer window, only 2 are still part of the current squad: Antonio Rudiger and the free transfer Willy Caballero. Rudiger alone to hold the first team.

Zappacosta’s departure should benefit 19-year-old defender Reece James. The teenager is currently injured but could have the chance to replace Cesar Azpilicueta on his return.
