Diego Laxalt: AC Milan left-back joins Celtic on season-long loan | Football news

AC Milan left-back Diego Laxalt has joined Celtic on a one-season loan on deadline day.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan international will spend the season with the Scottish champions. The clubs were unable to agree on a fee for an option to buy clause.

He completed his move from Scotland to Glasgow on Monday evening after passing a medical exam in London.

New Laxalt manager Neil Lennon, speaking after being named Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month for September, said: “I admire him a lot. Watching him at the World Cup, I thought that ‘ he had had a very good tournament, playing for a very good Uruguayan team – great players and he looked very comfortable in that company.

“We’ve been following him for a long time. We tried to get him in at this time last year, we couldn’t do it, but I’ve been a huge admirer of him for a long time.

“Getting this deal done is a fantastic deal for the board and the club. The player has made some real positive signs to come here. He looks really happy to be here, having spoken to him last night.

“I think he will add more quality and inspiration to the team.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said he had been interested in signing Diego Laxalt again for “a long time” after joining AC Milan on a one-season loan on deadline day

Asked if Laxalt would be available to face parent club AC Milan in the Europa League, Lennon added: “As far as I know he will be and he will be ready for the Rangers game as well.

“He’s been training, obviously he hasn’t played a lot for Milan so far, but he’s in good shape and he will be available for the next matches.”

The Serie A club paid just over £ 13million for Laxalt when he signed from Genoa in 2018.

The Uruguayan international has played 35 times for Milan but does not appear to be part of Stefano Pioli’s plans this season and has not played a minute of the current campaign so far.

Greg Taylor was the only Celtic player to hold the post following the departure of Boli Bolingoli, who joined Istanbul Basaksehir on loan in September.

Bolingoli was cleared to leave after leaving Neil Lennon furious by breaking coronavirus rules in August.

The 25-year-old traveled to Spain without informing the club, then played in a league game days later when he should have been in quarantine.

Forward Jack Aitchison left Celtic Park and signed for championship club Barnsley on a three-year contract.
