LOS ANGELES, October 25 – New sci-fi thriller Dune, a classic that nearly demanded treatment on the big screen, topped the North American box office this weekend with an estimated payout of $ 40.1 million (RM 166.4 million), the industry observer, Exhibitor Relations.

Yet this solid three-day screening for Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s opus came even as studio Warner Bros. was simultaneously releasing the film for streaming on the small screen via HBO Max, an increasingly common practice in the era of the pandemic.

With a star-studded cast led by Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa and Zendaya, the film tells the story of a family in the distant future struggling to survive on a treacherous desert planet.

Dune, with a clearly relevant environmental subtext, took US $ 180 million overseas, and Villeneuve, whose growing sci-fi catalog includes Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, hopes to make it the first of a two-part saga.

In distant second was the frontman of last weekend’s horror film Universal. Halloween kills, to 14.5 million US dollars. A sequel to that of 2018 Halloween, it again stars Jamie Lee Curtis, and the studio has announced that she will be back for another sequel next year.

Third place went to United Artists’ latest James Bond film, No time to die, to 11.9 million US dollars. Daniel Craig is playing, supposedly for the last time, as 007 came out of retirement for the last time – no really! – mission.

In fourth, the Sony superhero film Venom: let there be carnage, to 9.1 million US dollars. Tom Hardy plays the role of a journalist whose symbiotic bond with an alien gives him superpowers.

And the fifth went to a new twist on the 20th century, a computer-animated sci-fi comedy Ron went wrong, to 7.3 million US dollars. Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms are among the cast to tell the tale of a socially awkward college boy in the future who receives a faulty but generous robot as a gift.

To complete the top 10:

The Addams Family 2 (US $ 4.3 million)

The last duel (US $ 2.1 million)

Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings (US $ 2 million)

The French dispatch (US $ 1.3 million)

free guy (US $ 258,000) – AFP
