FACT CHECK: Did Hollywood actor Tom Hanks endorse Peter Obi?
A post circulating on social media claims that Tom Hanks, a Hollywood actor, backed Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi via a tweet.
The post, which first surfaced two days ago, hasn’t garnered much response until recently.

The message read: “If Peter Obi was an American or even an African American, the Americans would have given him a one-way presidential ticket without him challenging it. America and the world at large have not had the chance that Nigerians have right now to correct their mistakes.
“Americans saw Peter’s speech on one of their local televisions, after his speech there was a standing ovation for him all over America. -Tom Hanks”
Moreover, on his Facebook page, a Mr. Lekki shared a screenshot of Obi and Hanks’ photo alongside a video of him advising Nigerians to follow the actor’s advice.
The message reads: “Tom Hanks tweets about Peter Obi. Dear Nigerians, it is in our hands to make things right. The world is watching and we cannot afford to be disappointed.
The post had amassed over 2,000 views, 104 shares, 170 likes and 14 comments at the time of this report.
Trust’s daily checks have revealed that the mail in circulation is fake. Interestingly, the last time Hanks tweeted with his verified ID was two years ago on May 22, 2020.
Also, the claim that the Americans got a standing ovation is false and misleading because there was no media account of it.
