Actor Gary Sinise joined “Fox News Primetime” to discuss the meaning of Independence Day and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Gary Sinise Foundation.
GARY SINISE: A few years ago I wrote a book called Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service, and it sort of traces how I got into this field with our military and it starts with members of my family, World War I. , WWII, Korean era, Vietnam, lots of veterans in my family. I ended up playing a Vietnam vet in Forrest Gump and at the time I had done very little. I just hadn’t worked in the film or television business for a very long time when I started going out and visiting troupes around the world and going to hospitals, most of them didn’t. didn’t know who I was, but they did know Lieutenant Dan. They knew my face from the movie so when I started taking the band with me on these tours I just said let’s call him Gary Sinise and Lieutenant Dan Band they will at least know the guy who played the character comes to see them. Since then, as I said, we have played hundreds of concerts. The band is a program of my foundation, The Gary Sinise Foundation, kind of like when you support the USO and they send entertainment, if you support the Gary Sinise Foundation one of the things we do is to send the group and you can help us do that by going to GarySiniseFoundation.org.
Barely controversial to me, [Independence Day is] about freedom, and having been to places around the world, the war zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, places like that where they don’t really understand what freedom is. I have been to the North Korea-South Korea border several times and they are free in the South and enslaved in the North. You value your freedom much more and you value the people who provided it to you, and those are the men and women of the US military, which is why I created my foundation. I want to support them in any way I can because freedom is precious and it must be fought and must be protected. Independence from tyranny must be fought and protected and I thank God for the men and women who are willing to do it, and I just want to help them.
