Nudity in the media is always a controversial topic; some actors avoid certain roles due to the amount of nudity involved, fearing it will impact their future prospects. In a recent interview, The iron Throne Star Maisie Williams has opened up about her decision to audition for a role with a high amount of nudity, and how that role reflected on her and her career progression.
In an article written by QG that accompanies a photo shoot, Maisie Williams tells how The iron Throne and the fame that followed changed her life and acting career. Nowhere is this better seen than with the segment dedicated to the FX mini-series Gun.
According to QGWilliams’ involvement in the project began in 2020, when Williams’ agent tipped her off to the show and told her it was being managed by the legendary Danny Boyle, something that wouldn’t become public awareness until early 2021.
However, things got interesting when Williams found out she would be auditioning for the role of Jordan, a famous figure from early punk movement that worked in Vivienne Westwood’s infamous boutique Sex, a cultural epicenter that sold new fashion and fetish clothing and became the public face of British punk. There was also an in-house band that would become the Sex Pistols.
In the interview with QG, Williams recalls the show’s casting directors warning her about the show’s large amount of nudity. Williams admits she was hesitant, saying QG that:
“Just because of everything that’s been going on in the industry and all the horror stories I’ve heard…I want to be on this show because I’m the best person to do it, not because I’m the only girl who will take her top.
However, after sending a note to the team behind the show, Williams received a response from Danny Boyle, and that note allayed Williams’ fears. According to her, it made her realize that “Jordan’s whole ethos was turning the male gaze on himself, and it was overtly sexual in a way that put other people to shame.” Williams follows this up by pointing out that “If I take my top off, I want to make other people feel uncomfortable.”
Williams says for the next meeting, she had a Zoom call with Boyle. She wore: “a see-through KNWLS top with no bra underneath”, and that’s what landed her the role.
the QG the article also contains a commentary from Boyle, who comments on Williams’ ability to portray Jordan. Boyl says:
“It was the perfect opportunity to [Williams] have a great character. She’s a great down-to-earth actress, but Jordan [rejects] the very idea of everyday life. Maisie is a bit like that herself. In a calmer, gentler way, there’s a touch of Oscar Wilde in her, leading an awkward, self-aware nation to be braver when it comes to sexuality, sensuality, gender, beauty … »
Gun will follow Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones as the band becomes a superstar. However, the show’s production was mired in controversy. Johnny Rotten, lead singer of the Sex Pistols, attempted to sue the other members to prevent the band’s music from being used on the show. However, this legal maneuver failed.
The show is planned to go out May 31, 2022.
