Man Utd transfer news: Jesse Lingard moves to West Ham on loan

How did this movement come about?

Sheffield United, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion were also reportedly enthusiastic, while Marseille have investigated. Lingard, however, sees West Ham as a good option given their place in the standings.

Benrahma’s loan transfer to Brentford was made permanent on Friday to facilitate Lingard’s arrival. Premier League clubs are only allowed two domestic loan deals per season, with Benrahma and Craig Dawson previously occupying those places at West Ham.

Lingard’s signing is likely to end West Ham’s business.

What did the respective managers say about the move?

“He (Lingard) will give us more attacking options,” West Ham manager David Moyes said. “He can play in all positions along the front line and as a midfielder. “

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “We want Jesse to come back revitalized and to show West Ham how good he is.”

Why did West Ham bring in Lingard?

Moyes was keen to sign a player he worked with as a manager at Old Trafford.

Lingard did not play competitively under Moyes but performed well on the club’s pre-season tour in 2013 and trained with the first team between loans at Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion this campaign.

They also need new attacking options following the departure of Sébastien Haller earlier this month.

Wait, didn’t Manchester United just extend his contract?

Yes, they triggered their one-year extension in December. His contract was previously scheduled to expire this summer.

It will now run until summer 2022. That just meant they were protecting themselves from losing it for free this summer.

The 28-year-old has played very rarely this season.

What did Lingard say?

“I’m excited,” Lingard told West Ham TV.

“This is another new chapter in my life. Nothing is guaranteed but I have come here to work hard and help the team and bring my experience. This is the main objective. I just want to enjoy my football, start playing again and get back on the pitch.

“There were a lot of clubs involved but for me personally I felt it was the right decision. I obviously had a previous relationship with the manager because he was at Man U and I’ve played under him before, so he knows my qualities and what I can bring to the team.

“It is important that a player and a manager have a good relationship. (Moyes has) very good moral, he makes his team work hard and I have already discussed with him and there are no guarantees – it’s up to me to put the work in and put the transplant in, get in in the team and play well week after week.
