Mark Stoops ready to loan Lynn Bowden to John Calipari

With just nine healthy scholarship players, the Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari 6ft 9in British pitcher added Ben Jordan to the roster earlier this season.

Now with leader Ashton Hagans and EJ Montgomery both also injured, the Wildcats may need to get even more creative.

“Give me a few more weeks here,” Stoops said with a laugh. “Then we can loan him out for a few weeks and then come back for the bowl.”

Along with being one of the top football rookies in the nation and finishing second in Ohio Mr. Football, Bowden also played basketball at Warren G. Harding High School in Youngstown, averaging 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists per game and play in the Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game as a senior in 2017.

Stoops has no doubt that Bowden could bring something to the table, if only for his sheer competitiveness.

“You see the competitive nature in him. I don’t put anything above him,” Stoops said. “He’s a real competitor…so he could probably help them a bit. I don’t know. Our guys are pretty good. He could definitely come out and mix in training and help them, that’s for sure.” .”

Bowden also fanned the flames via Twitter on Thursday.

Of course, Bowden has enough on his plate already, doing everything for Kentucky this season except popping the popcorn at Kroger Field.

Bowden started the season as a wide receiver, but started the last four games as a quarterback, where he led the Wildcats to a 2-2 record. Twice during that span he was named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

He is the only player in the nation to lead his team in both rushing (712) and receiving (348) and ranks seventh nationally in all-around yards, averaging 145.9 yards per game, which is n doesn’t include Bowden’s passing distance as a quarterback. He is one of only two players in the top seven nationally in rushing, receiving, punt return and kickoff return yards.

With the LSUs Clyde Edwards-Helairefrom Virginia Joe Roseau and Nebraska Wandale RobinsonBowden was announced Thursday as one of four finalists for the Paul Hornung Award, which recognizes college football’s most versatile player.

Bowden ranks 13th on the UK career receiving yards list with 114 and 18th on the career receiving yards list with 1,303 yards.

Kentucky (4-5, 2-5 SEC) returns to action Saturday at Vanderbilt (2-7, 1-5) for a kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
