VILLAGE OF MAYFIELD, Oh – Progressive insurance the most dedicated employee, Flo, falls in love – well, maybe.
In a new ad campaign, slated to launch Monday, May 23, consumers will experience another chapter in Flo’s story that connects her to one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors. Jon Hamm.
During the three commercial series, “Flo’s Love Interest”, we find that the two were set up on a blind date while still a struggling actor. He liked her, but she only seemed interested in saving him money on his house and car insurance.
This unlikely pairing and romance arc is a first for Flo, played by comedian Stephanie Courtney, and Progressive’s lineup of campaigns and characters.
“Flo has been at the heart of Progressive’s marketing for nearly fifteen years. We witnessed his undying love for insurance, friendships developed and even met his family, but one aspect of his life has remained a mystery until now,” said Remi Kent, Chief Marketing Officer of Progressive. “Partnering with Jon Hamm, we’re fanning the flames of brand love in a way consumers can relate to, because who hasn’t experienced the awkwardness of unrequited love.”
The ad campaign follows Flo navigating an unexpected street encounter with Hamm. While he seems, once again, eager to conquer her heart, Flo only has room for one love in her life: insurance. The commercial series is set to premiere nationwide throughout the summer on broadcast and digital channels, as well as on Hulu.
Years after their unsuccessful blind date — and subsequent rise to stardom — Hamm crosses paths with Flo again, reigniting her interest in the apron-clad insurance maven. The three-part journey features Hamm yearning for Flo’s attention, with romantic gestures and unexpected insurance urges.
“Like any episodic story, guest stars are a great way to breathe new life into familiar stories,” said Lauren DeVito, account executive at Allison + Partners, the New York advertising agency of Progressive. “When we choose our guest stars, we seek to identify those who have deep followings or who are culturally relevant. That’s why we chose Jon, one of Hollywood’s most famous actors. Plus, his name is synonymous with the world of advertising thanks to his iconic role in ‘Mad Men‘, so it was easy to work with him.
“Unanswered love is something we can all relate to, so I was thrilled to be able to play a part in this campaign,” Hamm said, in a statement to Progressive. “I really enjoyed the dynamic between Flo and me and was thrilled to play myself in a campaign with a trusted brand and an iconic character.”
Will Hamm win her affections? Will Flo stay true to herself, offering insurance discounts when and how she can? We’ll just have to watch to find out.
