Actor Carl Weathers – who played the role of Apollo Creed in the iconic “Rocky” films – is up for an Emmy Award this weekend for his work on the Disney + series, “The Mandalorian”. And funny anecdote: he’s a former student of San Diego State University.
Weathers went to SDSU between 1968 and 1970 and was a linebacker for the Aztecs football team. Check out this photo from his days at SDSU.
He will play briefly for the Oakland Raiders (1970-1971) and the Canadian Football League (1971-1973).
When not playing football, SDSU said Weathers honed his acting skills as a major in the performing arts in college.
And the path to the theater has paid off.
Weathers would go on to play a major role in the “Rocky” franchise alongside Sylvester Stallone and other blockbuster films. Another fun fact: he is the voice of Combat Carl in the “Toy Story” movies.
The Emmy nomination for her role as Greef Karga in “The Mandalorian” is a first for Weathers. He is in the running for the “Best Guest Actor in a Dramatic Series” award.
