It’s us Viewers have known for some time that the relationship between Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) doesn’t last into the future. Or rather, their marriage not.
Chris Sullivan, who plays Toby, spoke to TV Insider on the Paley Media Festival (PaleyFest) red carpet at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood to get some insight into what’s in store for his character and why Toby and Kate are going their separate ways. does not mean that he ‘I will no longer have my place at the Pearsons.
The actor also discussed his next project, a pilot for ABC, and his thoughts on possibly reuniting the Pearson clan for a revival in the future. Read on for the scoop!
It’s hard to believe that not only is the series ending, but Kate and Toby are going their separate ways. It must be more than just the fact that he wants to work in San Francisco. There must be!
Chris Sullivan: Oh yes. There’s more to come with Toby and Kate. You will see in [the April 5] episode where the cracks are in the foundation. Then the next episode will tell you everything you need to know about starting, breaking up and ending a relationship – and how everything is going well even if there is sorrow.
We saw Toby continue to be part of the family in flash-forwards. It looks like it won’t be a complete separation.
Yes. You are right. [Laughs] You answered your own question. Just because [Toby and Kate] aren’t in a relationship anymore doesn’t mean they aren’t report to one another. They still have children together. The grandchildren are part of this family. There’s a way to end a relationship without cutting [all] links with a group of people.
How did they make you look like you used to for those fantastic scenes Kate had?
They took out the old suit. I shaved my face. They made me a wig. I went back and forth between dentures, facial hair and [wardrobe]. It was quite a juggling act. It was like putting on an old pair of shoes. He came back pretty quickly. The Hawaiian shirt was on and Toby arrived!
What’s next for you?
I have a 30 minute comedy pilot at ABC called the son-in-law. The pilot is hilarious. We’ll see if he gets accepted. Otherwise, I’m working on three projects of mine that are very dark and a bit funny, but 180 degrees from Toby. It’s a good 30 minutes modern family-style comedy.
Today, there never seems to be enough content in light of streaming services. Are you ready for a It’s us limited series or reunion film on NBC or Peacock?
Ah of course ! I know we will do our own individual meetings. i think we should [revive] the show in ten years. No one will have to wear makeup or “grey” their hair.
Well except Mandy [Moore]. She will always have to wear makeup to look older.
