Why isn’t Sam in the ‘iCarly’ reboot? Why Jennette McCurdy is not coming back

If you’re a fan of the original, you might be wondering why Sam isn’t in the iCarly reboot and if Jennette McCurdy’s character could return for a future rebirth season.

iCarly premiered in 2007 and followed Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove), a teenage girl from Seattle, Washington, who created her own web show named iCarly with her best friends, Sam Puckett (McCurdy) and Freddie Benson (Nathan Kress), in the loft where she and her older brother, Spencer Shay (Jerry Trainor), live. The show was created by Dan Schneider, who also created Amanda’s Show, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, Victorious and other Nickelodeon shows. iCarly raced for six seasons until his final in 2012.

After iCarly‘s finale, McCurdy starred in a spin-off alongside Ariana Grande titled Sam & Chat. The show followed that of Sam and Grande Victorious character, Cat Valentine, as they become roommates and start a childcare business. The series ran for one season from 2013 to 2014. Given McCurdy’s popularity with Nickelodeon, fans expected her to be in the iCarly the comeback. So why isn’t Sam in the iCarly to restart ? Keep reading to find out.

In December 2020, news broke that a iCarly the reboot, which would take place 10 years after the original series, was in the works with Cosgrove, Kress and Trainor reprising their roles. However, one lead actor who would not return was McCurdy, who confirmed on an episode of the “Empty Inside” podcast in March that she would not be in the revival. So why is Sam in the iCarly to restart ? Well, McCurdy had quit acting after years of resentment towards his career. “My mom put me in when I was 6, and at my age, I guess, 10 or 11, I was the main breadwinner in my family,” she said. “It was really pressure from my family who didn’t have a lot of money, and that was the solution,” she said. “What I actually think has been helpful in leading me to some degree of success.”

McCurdy’s mother, Debbie, died in September 2013 after a 17-year battle with breast cancer. On the podcast, McCurdy revealed that her mother’s death had caused her to re-evaluate her acting career and the roles she had played in the past, including Sam. “I finally quit after the death of my mom, because with her death a lot of her ideas for my life died, and it was her own journey and it was definitely difficult, ”she said. She went on to reveal that her acting career left her “so dissatisfied with the roles I played and that was the simplest and most embarrassing thing.” She continued, “I resent my career in so many ways.”

In the iCarly reboot, Laci Mosley will play Harper, Carly’s roommate and one of her best friends. According to the show’s press release, Harper, who is pansexual, is described as an aspiring fashion designer who dreams of a fashion career after her wealthy family loses all of their money. After Harper’s announcement, Mosley was the target of racist attacks from who saw the character as Sam’s replacement. iCarly Writer Franchesca Ramsey responded in a tweet at the time, defending Mosley and denying that the character was meant to replace Sam.

Carly’s new best friend / roommate will be part of the LGBTQ + community as a pansexual character who dreams of becoming a fashion designer after her wealthy family has lost all of their money. The character will also serve to push Carly out of her comfort zone as she takes on everyday obstacles. “Hey #iCarly tweeps! I see a lot of racist abuse being launched against one of our stars and I would like you to join me in calling her when / if you see it, ”she tweeted in May. “I’m sad that has to be said, but if I’m being honest… I kinda expected it. And I hate it. It is heartbreaking that EXISTING black women are leading an attack of racist abuse. It is not ok. And being a spectator isn’t okay either.

She continued, “Laci’s character, Harper, is no substitute for Sam. No one could replace Jeanette McCurdy or her incredible talent! But it is both racist and completely unfair to decide that Laci did not deserve his role especially since the series has not even been released yet !! ”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in June, Cosgrove confirmed that the show would address Sam’s absence. “Certainly we touch a lot on the whole relationship with Sam and where Sam is at in the pilot episode,” he said. she declared. “And then we mention her a bit throughout the season, so we’ll definitely explain it on the show.”

the iCarly reboot is available to stream on Paramount +.
