Zac Efron is in trouble after filming a video with a bear

Zac Efron is in trouble after shooting a video with a bear. A weird phrase that’s the result of an even weirder promotional campaign that sees the former musical high school star pours out her heart and soul on a park bench next to a large grizzly bear. FilmWeb reports that animal welfare organization PETA slammed the actor for the promotional ad. The full announcement can be seen below.

The video shows Zac Efron humorously engaging in a little one-sided conversation with the grizzly bear before emotionally draining himself, captioned; “Oh, hey there, bear! 6.14.22 Any guesses?” PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) released a statement criticizing Efron for the promotional publicity; “It’s hypocritical to exploit an animal to possibly help one another. No real conservation group already force captive animals to perform tricks for the camera to raise awareness of their wild counterparts” (via TMZ).

Is Zac Efron a hypocrite? Maybe he is, because PETA has pointed out that using a captive animal to raise awareness about free animals isn’t entirely ethical. PETA refers to Zac Efron becoming the brand’s chief executive and a shareholder of the company Kodiak Cakes, a Utah-based food company that offers whole-grain food products. The ad was used to tease his partnership with Kodiak Cakes. Since his Instagram ad featuring the grizzly bear in captivity, Zac Efron posted an Instagram promo featuring Kodiak Cakes products, where all proceeds will go towards preserving the grizzly bear and wildlife habitats. Therein lies the reason PETA accused Efron of hypocrisy.

Zac Efron has already experienced a vegan diet and had attributed it to his supreme physical condition, which is evident in films such as Baywatch, it is therefore true that the actor has integrated animal welfare and ethical considerations into his thinking in the past. The promotional campaign alongside Kodiak Cakes generating revenue for preserving wild grizzly bear habitats also indicates that Efron considers animal welfare. It would seem, then, that his comedic skit with the captive bear is an unnatural faux pas for the actor and while it was done with the best of intentions, PETA certainly doesn’t see it that way.

Grizzly Bears aside, Zac Efron is busy with his acting career. The star has been rumored to be in contention for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past, but despite there being no other MCU news, he is expected to star in future projects such as The greatest beer race of all time. Directed by Peter Farrelly (green paper), the film stars Zac Efron, Russell Crowe and Bill Murray and follows a New York native in 1967, setting off on a journey to bring beer to his childhood friends fighting in the Vietnam War. The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. On top of that, Efron stars in a reboot of three men and a baby and will produce and star in Killing Zac Efron, a series that will drop the actor in the jungle of a remote island for an expedition. Will Zac Efron respond to PETA’s statement regarding his promotional announcement with the grizzly bear in captivity, or will his latest efforts to raise funds for wild grizzly bear reserves work in his favor? Only time will tell.
